Astronaut Returns to Purdue – Grand Prix Grand Marshal

This year is an exciting year for the Grand Prix Foundation as we celebrate another anniversary; 55 years of Grand Prix! In honor of this milestone, NASA Astronaut, and Purdue Alumnus, Dr. Drew Feustel will serve as the Grand Marshal for our ceremony. While in attendance, he will return the Purdue banner that journeyed with him into space on the last Shuttle Mission in the Spring of 2011 to President Córdova.

About Dr. Drew Feustel:

Dr. Feustel is a former Boilermaker, graduating with a BS in Solid Earth Sciences and MS in Geophysics here at Purdue University before receiving his Ph.D. in Geological Sciences, specializing in seismology, from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

As a teenager Dr. Feustel worked as an auto mechanic in Farmington Hills, Michigan, restoring 1950s Jaguars. At Purdue University, Dr. Feustel served as a Residence Hall Counselor for two years at Cary Quadrangle and also worked as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department. His summers were spent working as a commercial and industrial glazier near his home in Michigan.

Dr. Feustel is not a new face to the Purdue Grand Prix, he served as the driver for Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity for three years while at Purdue. He is still involved with karting through the International Karting Federation and enjoys kart racing with his two boys.

Dr. Feustel was selected as a Mission Specialist by NASA in July 2000 and reported for training in August 2000. Following the completion of two years of training and evaluation he was assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Space Shuttle and Space Station Branches.

Dr. Feustel served on the crew of STS-125, the final Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. The mission successfully extended and improved the observatory’s capabilities through 2014. In completing his first space mission, Feustel logged almost 13 days in space and a total of 20 hours and 58 minutes in three EVAs.

On May 16, 2011, Feustel launched on Space Shuttle Endeavour’s final mission, the penultimate mission of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program, for STS-134 to the International Space Station. Feustel served as lead space walker and logged 21 hours and 20 minutes over 3 EVAs.

Registration is Open!

Registration for the 2012 race is now open. Please go to registration.purduegrandprix.org to complete your team’s entry and be on the lookout for the email you will receive after you complete your registration.

Office hours for the rest of the fall semester will be Wednesday and Thursday (12/7, 12/8) from 9:30 am to 3:30pm. Please bring your money and forms to the office during those hours to complete your registration.

Office hours will be held Monday through Thursday during the Spring semester beginning during the second week of classes.

Alumni Tailgate

Grand Prix alums will be hosting a tailgate before and after the September 17th football game at Tarkington Hall from 8:30-4:30. Dave Fuhrman, 1981 winner will have his Grand Prix Museum on display, along with Alumni Race information for the 55th running of the Grand Prix on April 21, 2012.

Come join us for food, fun, and a little Grand Prix history!!
